Gosh, Dwight Noticed I was There!

I'm so delighted that my dropping in unannounced to the TechBlog's Friday Night Geek Gathering was noted and actually recorded HERE! It was a large turnout too...lots of nice folks with ultra cool toys-with-chips! I was lusting after Jay Lee's camera....a Sony whiz-bang if I ever saw one and he's a man of many talents. OR he's hell on wheels on bugs, not sure which, but he made an outstandingly good photo of something with many legs and wings, possibly doing the wild thing (which one would expect from a ....I dunno....wild thing!) or it could of been in some kind of death throes from the St. Arnold's fumes. It did finally fly away probably shooting all the onlookers the insect equivalent of The Bird.

The best part was that I felt welcome! It's like you're in their collective living room or something and if you've ever thought about attending and are shy like me then take it from me, they are all very friendly and interesting to hang with. All age groups were represented too...one of the best things about computer life and the subsequent gatherings. For years when I ran BIO Feedback BBS it delighted me that one couldn't tell from the writings how old someone was and more often than not the mental image we formed was way off. I used to like to play up how OLD I was and then show up in person and have people surprised.... that wouldn't work now though because for some reason I did get old!! Grumble, grumble.

I also got to hold and SMELL Mr. Silverman's 1st book! I like the smell of fresh printers ink. I used to like the smell of gasoline too back in the olden days when it smelled good. It's a wonder I didn't do harm to myself back then sniffing the nozzle!

Well I'm off to the ballgame today and then on to the TriStar card show at G. R. Brown's. It cost as small fortune to get autographs of Roy, Lance and Craig plus Hunter and Scott, but it's not something I normally spend big bucks on so I've already rationalized it in my mind. Don't you just love how you can do that with your own mind and get away with it!

If You Never Read Another Blog....

....please go and read any of these wonderful posts:

Meditations On Gun Control

We License Cars ... Yackyackyack

Virginia Tech Shooting

The author certainly knows his stuff. 'Course it doesn't hurt that the stuff he knows is also the stuff I agree with, but what makes it so cool is that he writes probably exactly like he talks. He doesn't pussyfoot around with fancy words. He's just wonderful! He's also witty which is the single most important quality I look for online. His name is Lawdog and his blog is The LawDog Files.

When you quote him, and you will, don't forget to give credit where credit is due....he deserves the respect.

My Thoughts On Unsolicited Comments

Over at LivingAfterWLS there's a post about Unsoliticted comments: Where do they lurk in your life? and it got me to thinking about things people say to kids and the way it can shape their lives.

I've always been "sensitive" to what others say and it hurts a lot to hear what they say to kids that are "different". I'm not sure now or back then who decides what makes someone "different", but boy howdy if you fit into that flexible category you better be tough to survive. I wasn't tough, but I developed many coping skills that serve me well to this day. I wish I could go back knowing what I know now and tell them all off, or at the very least, could have learned to "consider the source" and let it slide right off my hide. The older I get the more I'm convinced that we are the sum of what life deals us. Had I been one of the "beautiful people" maybe I wouldn't of followed the course that was charted just for me. Maybe I wouldn't of taught my girls to try to consider other people's feelings and look for the good in everyone because there is good to be found even if you have to dig deep to discover it.

I was a fat kid, then a fat teen, then a fat young adult who blossomed into a fat wife and mom. As a kid my worst word wounds were from a skinny little piece of crap and his buds who taunted me with "Sixteen Tons" all during the 7th grade. They were like a swarm of bees, waiting for me to venture out into the sunlight and then swarming around me chanting that taunt. I hated them. I still do. I always will. I wasn't all that fond of Tennessee Ernie Ford either!

One of the coping skills I learned was to denigrate myself with humor before someone else could slam dunk me with their hateful or thoughtless comments. I went on to use humor both as a release for my own tensions and a kind of glue that bound others to me. You know the drill ... "all fat people are jolly" .... well some of us are or so you'd think. Looking back it was a good thing that I had to develop others ways to fit in to the small group that made up my world in elementary, junior and senior high schools. I made life long friendships and for a variety of reasons having those friends probably saved my life and my sanity.

Along the way I also developed passive-aggressive tendencies and that's not a good thing. When I do draw a line in the sand to take a stand I tend to go overboard and be aggressive instead of firm and in control of my emotions. OR I drop someone like a hot potato and avoid them like the plague. (Also I can and do combine cliches often in the same sentence! It's both a gift and a curse!) I would rather not face confrontations if I can avoid it. I'd prefer to just never have to deal with that person again.

Even as a long married adult with children of my own I was taunted about my weight. While walking through my own neighborhood, in an effort to exercise, the adolescent son of an acquaintance hollered some unkind words about my need to lose weight to my retreating back as I went by. The first coping skill I ever learned was to NEVER turn around, just keep your back to them and continue walking as if you didn't hear a thing. Never let them see you cry! Never let them think it hurt! Never bleed in public! It made me so angry and upset that I went on a diet then and there and lost quite a bit of weight, but alas it didn't STAY off hence the eventual need for the RNY WLS to amend my pig-out ways.

Words can and do pierce the psyche, and they hurt every bit as much as the sticks and stones, but when you get to a good spot to look back on the past you realize that you are just as good as anyone else and maybe better than one or two. You survived it, you didn't quit, you're the gol-durn Energizer Bunny!

ATM'S MUST-READ Blog Post

It's no secret that I think Attila The Mom over at Cheaper Than Therapy is a word genius. She puts words together in such a way that I'm just blown away...she makes me laugh out loud, she makes me cut and paste and send "her stuff" to my kids and close friends so they too can chortle out loud! Her point of view makes me think too. And my kids and close friends will tell you that getting me to think is a major accomplishment. I act, I react, I brood, I worry, I cuss, I go off on tangents, but they don't usually see me think. But, hey, sorry, this is NOT about me - although pretty much everything IN this blog is - it's about talent and The Mom has got it by the double handfuls!

Check out Titillating News for just a tiny taste (all sorts of puns there, trust me on this one!).

Re: Umm...Blogger?...Do We have a Problem?

This is so good! You tell 'em, Claus! And while you're at it, ask why I have to logon constantly! If I want to add a comment somewhere, if I want to post here.....it gets old real fast! This is my computer, being used in my home, cookies from Blogger/Google/etc. are all welcome....I click the "remember me" thing and STILL it acts like its never seen me before.... gripe, gripe, gripe.... add that to the fact that their letters and numbers I'm asked to reproduce in order to comment leave a LOT to be desired in the way they are presented. Irritates the living piss out of me to have to keep typing new arrangements because I can't tell if that's a "t" or "1" or "l" or "e" or "3" or something that's totally made-up just to confuse me!

I guess the bottom line is still that it's all free. It's me that has the problem.

Suburban Goddess's Freedom Of Political Correctness

Suburban Goddess: Freedom of Political Correctness
Thursday December 07th 2006, 12:18 pm

"I was watching a Carlos Mencia (dee dee dee) comedy special about a year ago. At the end of his routine, he was ranting about freedom of speech, and closed his act with five minutes of racist, bigoted, biased nicknames for basically every single race & religion on the planet. He then challenged the audience to go into work on Monday & try to say the same things he had just said.

It was a brutal realization that I have absolutely NO freedom of speech. I couldn’t even get the first two out of my mouth before someone would grab me by the hair and hurl me down the stairs towards the HR Department. Not that I would say any of those things anyway, but honestly… even if you wanted to… you CAN’T. In ANY context. And that got me thinking just how hypocritical this country has become...” [Click the link to read the entire post].

At the bottom the Goddess said:
But it seems that political correctness is not helping anyone’s situation. Unfortunately, it does not appear that diversity & tolerance are two principals that can peacefully coincide. Rodney King was completely profound in his simple statement, “Why can’t we just all get along?”

Why can’t we?

I'll tell you why we can't. M-O-N-E-Y and P-O-W-E-R. For instance people in the upper echelons of the black movement [the ones that claim to be religious] are very apt at stirring the pot of hatred because it's to their benefit that they keep the division apparent. Good Lord can you imagine how difficult it would be for these men if they actually had to go to WORK to make a living? If everyone lived in peaceful harmony there'd be no more photo ops! There'd be no more speaking engagements! There'd be no more cash contributions!

And what's more you can substitute any other color and any other group and come up with the same bottom lines .... The Jewish Defense League, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), even the vile KKK. It's the same for any of the hot button polarized subjects ... gun control and the right to bear arms; abortion and the right to life and so on and so on .... the biggest of the big is Republicans vs. the Democrats. God forbid those two should reach common ground and actually work for the benefit of all the citizens!

It's the proliferation of hatred and fear that generate money. Division is a cash cow.

Wow! Thanks For Stopping By, Y'all!

It's kind of difficult to see, but in the past week this blog has had 85 visits with the total pages viewed at 179! Usually I only get about 50 visits and those are all from my best friend and my sister-in-law!! hehe... 'Course the true test is how many of those that wandered in off of Google and such come BACK, but first things first, I'm happy to have the traffic.

Chart from Google Analytics, a cool FREE device useful for real blogs that sell stuff, etc. and have thousands of hits a day. You know it's cool if it lets me in with my tiny blog!
